Worksite Wellness: Hello, Winter Flu Season

It’s that time of year again when one coworker gets sick and then it seems like the entire office has been compromised. But what is the flu exactly and how can it be prevented?

Influenza, AKA “The Flu,” is a respiratory illness typically caused by one of two viruses: Influenza A or Influenza B. Each year, about 75% of people who contract the flu are victims of type A, though each is severe and highly contagious. The symptoms include: fever, cough, sore throat, aches, and more (but trust us, none of it is fun). Contracting the flu is can put you out of work for days or even over a week. It’s important to take preventative measures to prevent falling sick and take the proper medicine if you do.

Tips To Prevent The Flu

  • Wash your hands with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds.
  • Don’t touch your face, especially after touching objects in your environment.
  • Take care of your body. Regular moderate exercise can cut the risk of respiratory infections by 1/3, but strenuous exercise can actually increase your chances of infection 2-6x.
  • Eat the right foods. Studies show that people with low levels of protein in their diets have depleted immune systems. By incorporating protein into your diet you can give your immune system the boost it needs.
