Millennials have a bad rep when it comes to the workplace, but it’s not because they aren’t hard workers. Quite the opposite. Many in this generation saw their parents lose their jobs when the economy dropped in 2008 and continued to struggle years later. Since the days of elementary, they were under pressure to beat out the competition so they would have the best chance of not only being accepted into college but to earn scholarships for such a costly education.

This is a generation that is used to working hard and exceeding already high expectations. But with their parents’ history, and their own debt from student loans, there is one thing they demand from their employer above all else: job stability.

What exactly is job stability to the future workforce?

a. Benefits: Having healthcare is a deal breaker for when it comes to accepting a job offer. How can a person work if they are sick? How can they get better if they can’t afford a doctor? Just had a baby? Don’t forget your bill charging half of your salary on top of your student loans. Benefits in the form of healthcare, dental-care, vacation time, and retirement plans are essential to attracting top young talent.

b. Security: Every student has had that favorite teacher who suddenly wasn’t at the school the next year, cut just before their tenure. Not only is it difficult to get a job, but it can be even harder to keep it depending on the industry. Call Millennials crazy, but they would prefer not to live in constant fear that they will be cut loose even though they are excellent at their job.

There is a gap between what the younger generation of workers need versus what the workplace offers. The office of the future will close this gap, if not eliminate it all together. Mainly, there are three categories: technology, connectivity, and culture.

Technology

Technology is everywhere and it only advancing, becoming faster, smaller, sleeker, an integrated part of our daily lives. Students in universities in universities are learning with new technologies. They cannot be expected to backtrack down into a slower, more cumbersome style of work.

Data literacy has become a new norm. Many Millennials understand the output information from technology sources and this is an invaluable resource to businesses, but they must have the materials to complete this task. Companies must stay up to date on the latest technology and strategize ways to blend it into a competitive work style.

One thing Millennials love is convenience, and who can blame them? In a world where people are asked to do so much more within the same 24 hour time frame, things can get overwhelming fast. Artificial Intelligence is the way of the future, allowing programs to anticipate and automatically deploy certain responses to a situation. This allows the worker operating the device to save time and company money. For the younger generation, controlling such machinery and data is second nature. Technology, innovation and the office are indeed the future.

Connectivity

Being “connected” doesn’t mean social media. It means having access to anyone at any point in time and place. Technology has a way of making our big world small, and globalization is a key factor in the future of the workplace. Having the ability to speak with people all over the world opens up countless of business opportunities…and it also means that more of employees may call their home their office. In fact, we are already seeing this trend as virtual meetings and simple laptop computers make working away from the office easier and easier. (Plus, who wouldn’t want to save all of that commute money?)

Culture

There are two points about culture that Millennials and the future of the workforce look for when applying to a job:

1. Cultural Diversity: Just as how office interiors of 2019 are blooming with colors, gone are the days of the whitewashed workforce. You can’t have globalization and remain without interacting with people of different cultures and backgrounds. Here in the United States, with so much diversity, the possibilities of advancement that can come from such a creative blending of ideas in the workplace are endless.

2. Corporate Culture: We have created a world where people are met with details in their life that says, “You belong here. You are one of this collective whole.” This was not so in the workplace. Companies creating a culture for themselves create an environment where an employee is not just a worker but an active member of a niche community. For example, sports teams have their colors, logos. Companies are doing the same. Just as when fans celebrate a team’s win, employees celebrate a company success story. Having a sense of community in the work environment not only encourages teamwork, but reduces turn over rates because employees feel like they are apart of something, not just a number.
